Happy New Year!

The festivities and merriment are about to begin, but all the fun & celebrating can sometimes make it all too easy to lose track of how many drinks you’ve actually had. Too many drinks can leave a gal with a splitting headache and massive hangover the next morning.  So if you’re planning on ringing  in the New Year with a toast or several, here are a few tips to help you enjoy yourself without paying the price for it morning after:

how to cure a hangover

Smart Snacking Don’t mix caffeine and alcohol. Some people believe that adding caffeine to alcoholic drinks like Red Bull and vodka or an espresso martini will somehow reduce hangover symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and drowsiness. In fact, the opposite is true. Recent studies have shown that drinking alcoholic beverages that contain caffeine does not reduce the severity of hangovers. Go easy on the coffee the next morning; it may wake you up, but it may also aggravate a headache.

Stick to lighter-colored drinks –  Stick to the lighter based drinks  like vodka, gin, light beer, & white wine, These are associated with less severe hangovers. This is because darker alcoholic drinks (bourbon, brandy, dark beer, red wine) contain higher levels of sugars. Sugar is that naturally occurs in alcoholic beverages as a result of distilling and fermentation, which contribute to hangover symptoms.

Eat and drink water while you drink  Food tends to slow the absorption of alcohol, so it takes longer for all those Mojitos to go to your head. Alcohol also makes you urinate and dehydrates you, so try to drink a glass of water for each alcohol-containing drink you have. The next morning, have a light protein based breakfast, such as wheat toast and scrambled eggs, to settle your stomach. This will restoring your blood sugar level and help you fight fatigue without worsening any nausea.

Don’t mix cigarettes and alcohol –  Research shows that smoking cigarettes on the same day as heavy drinking significantly increases the chances that you’ll have a hangover. Cigarette smoking is also associated with worse hangover symptoms, independent of the amount of alcohol consumed.

Go to bed –  Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest aggravators of hangover symptoms, so ring in the New Year, then get to bed. For better quality sleep, close the drapes and shades or wear a sleep mask to block out light. Sleep as long as  you can. Do not allow others to cut your sleep short. Before you turn in, turn off phones & alarms. Sleep is your best friend here.

Take aspirin and ibuprofenNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen have been shown to reduce hangover symptoms by inhibiting prostaglandins, the compounds that regulate muscle contraction. Avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol), which may dangerously irritate a liver that’s already stressed.

* TIP: Take the aspirin BEFORE you go to bed.

Take vitamin B when you wake up – This is one of our favorite tips. Vitamin B tends to get you going & tends to clear the fog and calms the effects of too much alcohol.

So we did the next best thing. When we heard NARS Cosmetics’ lead international stylist Janice Daoud would be in town next weekend for Nordstrom’s Beauty Trend Show, we called her up to discuss holiday makeup tips.

With her crazy jet-setting schedule, Daoud is a pro at looking great on the go. She was also nice enough to share her top five tricks for mastering day-to-night holiday glam — and all but one can be done in mere minutes, even seconds.

Though not if you try them all at one once.

Glowy Skin  Apply a highlighter on your cheekbones (just above your blush), center of the nose and on your Cupid’s bow for a healthy, radiant glow. Tip: Use this same trick with a brightening serum or luminizer to freshen your look throughout the day as a pearly, iridescent pick-me-up. Try: NARSskin Optimal Brightening Concentrate, $72.

Gold Eyes  Gold is a festive yet chic color. For day: apply a gold cream shadow followed by a gold powder shadow to your eyelids. For night: add a shimmery black gel liner and matte red lip. Try: [1 and 2] Eye Paint in Iskandar, $25, Shimmer Eyeshadow in Goldfinger, $24.

False Lashes  Individual lashes add natural-looking fullness and length for holiday drama that’s still totally office-appropriate. Fill in sparse gaps across the entire lid or just at the outer corner to change the shape of your eye.

Smoky Eyes  Line your eyes from the inner to outer corners, then use a smudge brush to diffuse and soften the line. Tip: hold your brush upside down, bristles closest to your lash line over the eyeliner, and press and pull all the way up for cloud-like smokiness. Repeat on the lower lash line and follow with a coat of mascara. Try: [3] Smudge Brush, $26.

Quick Red Lips  If nothing else, throw a red lipstick in your purse for an instant day-to-night transformation. It’s the easiest way to add a touch of holiday glam. Try: [4] Semi Matte Lipstick in Red Lizard, $26.

Dark circles can make you look old and haggard. Here is a new makeup tip that can help you camouflage those unsightly under-eye circles.

how to cover dark circles

We all love the upcoming holiday party season, but are all too familiar with how it can sap the life out of any well beauty regimen. Here is a new trick to help you combat those dark circles that are sure to show up just when you least need them. So after you’ve danced the night away and the sun is beginning to shine down, the next morning may not be quite so pretty. Here is a brand new idea to help cover up those nasty dark circles.

Tom Pecheux, Estee Lauder’s Creative Makeup Director has a completely new way to conceal those nasty under eye dark circles:

Tea bags? Nope. Concealer? Nope.

Yup,  here’s a brand new beauty tip to tackle those post party dark circles  …

Peach or coral tone blusher to the rescue ! Peach and orange tones are always the best. Peach for light to medium skin tones, Coral for darker skin tones.

After applying a peach or coral tone blusher to the apple of your cheeks, sweep the left-over powder from your brush under your eyes. The orange tone in the blush will neutralize the blue and green in your dark circles.

And lastly Tom adds, “My favorite makeup look on a woman is one that suits her perfectly! You may think a woman will look amazing in red lipstick, but if she doesn’t feel at ease with it, she’ll never wear it and she will just look uncomfortable. It’s really important for a woman to feel confident and great wearing makeup.”
