Having access to so many industry experts, scientific studies and groundbreaking products had opened so many doors for me. Thanks to these, I was able to understand my skin behaviors better, decrypt my products’ ingredients lists without flinching, and make more informed decisions about the products I buy. There was just one downside: I became a beauty product junkie. Read more

Rihanna’s Hot Mess Of A Clothing Line
Rihanna’s new clothing collection, Rihanna for River Island, has arrived and it looks like, well, pieces ripped from her closet. Taking a look at the campaign here, you can most definitely tell RiRi had a hand in the design process. The campaign stars not Rihanna herself, but models Jourdan Dunn, Charlotte Free, Tao Okamoto, Ataui Deng, and Bambi Northwood Blyth. The ads, like the (alleged) clothes in the line, are ’90s-inspired. Critics have called the collection “hideous” and ” a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. ” The island pop princess owns the wild child ’90s look. Often spotted out in cut-off shorts, midriff-baring tops, tees, cut-out dresses, and denim on denim, this clothing line screams Rihanna. And while it’s a little on the bland side, it’ll probably be a sell out.

The flavonoids found in grapes work to halt the chemical reaction that kills skin cells and causes sun damage. Here’s what happens: When UV rays hit your skin, they activate “reactive oxygen species,” or ROS, which then oxidize big molecules like lipids and DNA. This activates particular enzymes that kill skin cells. Read more

We’ve got a few too good to be true beauty products we just can’t live without — mascara tops that list. “Mascara is like a fabulous pair of heels to your little black dress. It’s the finishing touch,” says Toronto makeup artist, Allana Mirza. “Even if you’re running out the door to the grocery store and not in the mood for a full face of makeup, a few coats of mascara some lip gloss and you’ll look done.” A strong affinity for luscious lashes is as common today as it was in Ancient Egypt — for different reasons. Back then mascara was comprised of natural ingredients (burnt almonds, kohl or lead combined with honey and some not so appetizing crocodile feces) and was used to ward away evil spirits . The Victorian era witnessed the rising popularity of mascara as a cosmetic, but it wasn’t until 1917 that the first packaged mascara was created by Eugene Rimmel, founder of Maybelline. Since then, mascara has shot to stardom. It has graced and enhanced the eye fringe of celebrities like Twiggy, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry. These women know all to well that full, fluttery lashes don’t just frame your eyes, they up the ante to Va Va Voom! – READ MORE

Fewer Grays, No Dyes Researchers are in hot pursuit of a “cure” for gray hair—and they’re getting closer. A study published last year showed that gray is caused by hydrogen peroxide and other cell-damaging molecules that build up as we age, bleaching color from the hair. The absence of an enzyme called catalase allows these molecules to accumulate, but EXT Life Sciences, a Michigan-based biotechnology company, believes it has found a chemical compound that can restore catalase and thus return hair to its original color. The company is working to incorporate the ingredient into leave-in conditioners and serums, says cofounder Stanley Terlecky, PhD, professor of pharmacology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. And across the Atlantic, L’Oréal’s Paris-based hair biology research group recently identified a pair of genes that may determine the longevity of the cells that give hair its color. L’Oréal scientists are hard at work developing a treatment (either a pill or a topical formula) to block the progressive decline in these color-giving cells and stop—or at least slow—the graying process, says group director Bruno Bernard, PhD.
